50 Years of Experience!

Jan Limmen grew up on his father’s farm and worked in Holland’s world-renowned bulb fields. He learned about growing vegetables and flowering bulbs (tulips, daffodils, irises, hyacinths, lilies, dahlias, etc.), literally, from the ground up.

In 1971, 27-year old Jan came to America on a student visa for what he thought would be a one-year internship at a large, successful nursery in the Washington, DC suburbs. Learning by doing, he designed gardens, planted flowers, pruned trees, sculpted shrubs, and built waterfalls and retaining walls. Before long, he was managing landscaping crews, increasing the nursery’s business, and winning over clients with his knowledge, work ethic and sunny, outgoing personality. Clients returned again and again to ask for the Dutch guy’s help making buying and planting decisions.

The one-year internship turned into a career-long commitment to the landscaping business. When he struck out on his own in 1994, many of the nursery’s customers became his clients. He has served some of these same clients for over 30 years, driving from Maine to Maryland when called to prune trees, maintain gardens and plant flowers in landscapes he once designed.

Looking for a knowledgeable Tenants Harbor landscaping professional? Now semi-retired in Maine, Jan provides landscaping advice and services to a group of local clients that includes the Knox Museum (“Montpelier”) in Thomaston and the Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde.
